A Word for the Year

Instead of making New Year’s resolutions, which usually fall by the wayside within a few days or weeks of the beginning of the new year, many of my friends chose a word for the year.

I’ve done that several times, choosing words which I wanted to typify my life during the year, like hope and faithfulness, to help me to grow as a person and plant seeds of faith in others.

Nothing showed up on the horizon of my mind at the dawn of 2023. I didn’t want to copy another person’s word, and I wanted a word that was significant to me. Then, one day last week, the word peeked over the horizon like the morning sunrise: consistent.

I found this definition of the word consistent:

“Marked by harmony, regularity, or steady continuity; free from variation or contradiction” *

Harmony: I think of a beautiful musical composition, the masterful blending of objects and colors in a landscape painting, or people living together peacefully.

Regularity:  An established pattern, as in a person’s schedule.

Continuity: Stability, steadiness.

Some synonyms are unchanging, stable, steady. I also think dependable, faithful, and loyal are related.

By being consistent I save time, I am more productive, and people know they can depend on me.

As an author, it’s necessary to set aside a regular time to write– a schedule– which includes writing newsletters and blogs, two things with which I struggle to be regular. By establishing a pattern for publication in these two areas, I hope to connect with readers and increase my readership.

So, I think consistent is an important word for me this year.

To help me be consistent in life and in writing, I 1) set priorities, 2) make lists, 3) write notes to myself so I don’t forget, 4) schedule tasks, and 5) pray. No, I’m not ashamed to say that I remember better when I plan ahead and write things down.

1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” (NKJV)
