God, the Creator of the universe, made mankind in His image. That image was marred when Adam and Eve sinned, opening the way for suffering and death. Cain, Adam and Eve’s oldest child, killed his brother Abel, in a fit of anger and jealousy–the first murder. (See Genesis, chapters 1,3, and 4).

Today, many thousands of babies are being murdered under the guise of “legalized abortion.” In 1972, in the landmark case “Roe vs. Wade,” the U.S. Supreme Court declared that it is a woman’s Constitutional right to take the life of her baby through abortion. That decision triggered anger, demonstrations, and violence in both the Pro-Life, anti-abortion, and Pro-Choice, pro-abortion, camps.

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade in another landmark decision, saying it was up to each state to pass its own laws regarding abortion rights. This again triggered anger, demonstrations, and violence.

Abortion is more than getting rid of unwanted tissue from a woman’s body. The fetus, the new little life inside the mother’s womb, is a person who moves, feels, sucks its thumb, hiccups, and cries. It takes nourishment through the mother. Its heartbeat is detected at six weeks, and by twelve weeks, the fetus has developed all the necessary body systems. The rest of the time until birth is to allow the maturation of those systems and the growth of the baby in preparation for survival outside the womb.

Abortion can cause physical and emotional damage to the woman. Infections may cause sterility. Depression is common. And with the abortion pill that is gaining in popularity, there are other dangers that are often hidden. The father of an aborted child may suffer emotionally as well.

The abortion procedure will not cover up an immoral or criminal act, and throwing away the parts oof an aborted baby does not cause the memory to be deleted from the mind of the mother.

God Himself created life. He breathed life into Adam (Genesis 1:27). He declared murder a capital crime (Genesis 9:6). Psalm 139:13-16 is a  reminder of God’s part in the design and development of a baby before birth.

For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. (NKJV)

God holds human life to be sacred, and so should we.

What better way to teach the sanctity of life than to teach our young people to save sex for marriage alone. Sex is not for entertainment, but it is intended as a means of communicating love in a setting of marital commitment. It saddens me that our girls and young women are being taught that babies are junk to be disposed of in order to get on with their lives.

The Christian community should be prepared to help young women who are struggling with unplanned or crisis pregnancies. There are Christian ministries designed to give aid and counseling to these women. Abortion is not their only option, and there are people who care.

Most of all, they need to know that there is a God who loves them and cares personally for them and their unborn child.

Support life. It’s sacred.
