A friend is a person you know well and are fond of. Someone you can depend on when you’re going through deep waters. Someone like Jonathan, the son of Israel’s first king, who became David’s best friend.

How many of us can claim to be a friend like Jonathan? Instead of being jealous that David would be the next king, Jonathan supported and encouraged David. He protected David from his mentally imbalanced father.
He swore fidelity to David when David would become king. His faith in the God of Israel equaled his friend’s, and he encouraged David in the Lord.

Jonathan died in battle before David became king of Israel. David mourned his death, and I’m sure he greatly missed his dear friend. Would David have made some wiser choices later in life if Jonathan had been there to encourage him? Perhaps.

Faithful and loyal – that’s the kind of friend I want to be
